The catch

The reward is paid as cash into the enrolled CMA or IRA and can be withdrawn once deposited (IRA withdrawals follow normal IRA rules). The tier is set 90 days after you meet the funding requirement, based on net new assets, so withdrawals or transfers out during that period reduce the tier or cancel the reward. Trading gains and losses are ignored.

How to claim

  1. Start an application for a new individual Cash Management Account or a Traditional, Roth or SEP IRA from the Merrill Edge offer page.
  2. Enter offer code 600ME in the online application, or give it to a Merrill Financial Solutions Advisor at 888.637.3343 or at a Bank of America financial center.
  3. Within 45 days of opening, move at least $20,000 in cash or securities from outside Merrill and Bank of America Private Bank.
  4. Keep the net new assets in the account for 90 days after meeting the funding requirement.
  5. Receive the cash reward in the CMA or IRA within two weeks after the 90-day period ends.

Full review

Merrill Edge, the self-directed side of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith (a Bank of America company), pays a one-time cash reward for funding a new account with outside money. You must enter offer code 600ME during the application, online or when speaking with a Merrill advisor, and you are responsible for making sure you are enrolled.

The offer covers new individual Cash Management Accounts (CMAs, Merrill's taxable brokerage account) and new Traditional, Roth or owner-only SEP IRAs, whether self-directed or in Merrill Edge Advisory, Merrill Guided Investing or Guided Investing with an Advisor.

You have 45 days from opening to bring in at least $20,000 of qualifying net new assets. Merrill then waits 90 days after you meet that funding requirement and sets the reward from your net new assets at that point: $20,000 to $49,999 earns $100, $50,000 to $99,999 earns $150, $100,000 to $199,999 earns $250, and $200,000 or more earns $600.

Net new assets means incoming cash, securities and margin balance transfers minus anything withdrawn or transferred out over the preceding 24 weeks, so moving money out during the hold lowers your tier or cancels the reward.

Trading gains and losses are ignored. Assets moved from other Merrill accounts, Bank of America Private Bank, or 401(k) plans administered by Merrill do not count. The reward is deposited within two weeks after the 90-day period, so the wait from opening can be close to five months.

The catch is the size of the entry tier: $100 for $20,000 is a 0.5% return, and the $600 top tier needs $200,000. Cash bonuses are limited to one CMA and one IRA per account holder. Business, investment club, partnership and certain fiduciary accounts are excluded, and Merrill may report the reward to the IRS on Form 1099.

There is no published end date, and Merrill can change or cancel the offer at any time without notice. In an advisory account, the reward becomes subject to the program fee.

Pros

  • +Paid in cash, and market losses during the hold do not reduce the reward.
  • +Works for IRAs as well as the taxable CMA, and you can earn one bonus on each.
  • +Securities transferred in kind count, so you do not need to sell to qualify.
  • +No published end date.

Cons

  • −The $20,000 entry requirement is high for a $100 reward (0.5%).
  • −The advertised $600 needs $200,000 or more in net new assets.
  • −The code 600ME must be entered at account opening; it cannot be added later.
  • −Money from other Merrill accounts, Bank of America Private Bank or Merrill-administered 401(k) plans does not count.
  • −The wait from opening to payout can be close to five months.
  • −Taxable income; Merrill may issue a Form 1099.
