The catch

The match is credited inside the IRA, so normal IRA withdrawal rules and taxes apply. Removing matched money from the Robinhood IRA within 5 years of the match triggers an Early Removal Fee equal to the match on the amount removed. Cancelling Gold within 1 year of your first Gold match forfeits the extra 2%.

How to claim

  1. Open a self-directed Robinhood Traditional or Roth IRA.
  2. Optionally subscribe to Robinhood Gold ($5 a month) to raise the contribution match from 1% to 3%.
  3. Contribute from a linked bank account, up to the IRS annual limit ($7,500 for 2026 if you are under 50).
  4. The match is credited to the IRA automatically, generally soon after the contribution is made.
  5. Keep matched money in the IRA for 5 years, and keep Gold for 1 year after your first Gold match, to avoid clawbacks.

Full review

Robinhood Financial LLC matches contributions to its self-directed Traditional and Roth IRAs. Without a subscription the match is 1% of each eligible contribution. Robinhood Gold members, who pay $5 a month, get 3%. For 2026 the IRA contribution limit is $7,500 if you are under 50, so a full year of contributions earns $75 at 1% or $225 at 3%.

Gold costs $60 a year, so the extra 2% on a maxed-out contribution ($150) nets about $90 after the fee unless you already pay for Gold. To keep the full Gold rate you must stay subscribed for one year after your first Gold-matched deposit; cancel earlier and Robinhood takes back the additional 2%.

Transfers and 401(k) rollovers into a Robinhood IRA earn a 1% match for everyone, now that the 2% Gold transfer promotion ended on April 30, 2026. Prior-year contributions made before the tax filing deadline also count. The match is usually credited soon after the deposit, it does not count toward your annual contribution limit, and Robinhood reports it as interest earned inside the IRA.

The main catch is the 5-year earn-out. If you withdraw or transfer money out of your Robinhood IRA within five years of a match being credited, Robinhood applies the removal first to money that earned no match, then to gains, and then charges an Early Removal Fee equal to the match on any matched money removed.

Required minimum distributions can trigger the fee too. Inherited IRAs and Robinhood Strategies managed IRAs are not eligible, you need earned income to contribute, and the program is for US residents only. Robinhood presents the match as ongoing with no end date, but the rate is subject to change.

Pros

  • +No subscription needed for the 1% match
  • +3% with Gold, about $225 on a maxed-out 2026 contribution
  • +The match does not count toward the IRA contribution limit
  • +IRA transfers and 401(k) rollovers also earn 1%

Cons

  • −Without Gold the match is small: $75 on a $7,500 contribution
  • −Gold costs $60 a year, which eats into the extra 2%
  • −5-year Early Removal Fee on matched money that leaves the IRA
  • −Cancelling Gold within a year claws back the extra 2%
  • −US residents only; inherited and managed IRAs are excluded
