eToro was founded in Tel Aviv in 2007 by brothers Yoni and Ronen Assia together with David Ring, originally under the name RetailFX. Since ESMA's 2018 product intervention measures, which the FCA later made permanent in the UK, brokers cannot offer monetary or non-monetary benefits to retail clients as an incentive to trade CFDs. That is why classic deposit-match bonuses have disappeared from European CFD brokers. eToro's workaround is legitimate but narrow: the welcome bonus is real stock that you own, and the terms state explicitly that it is not provided as an incentive to trade CFDs. The practical effect is that eToro can still hand European and UK sign-ups something of value, but it comes as a small equity position tied to a deposit, not as tradable bonus credit.
