Checking availability…The catch
The match is real cash inside the IRA, treated as interest income rather than a contribution. For contributions settled on or after September 22, 2026 there is no holding period or Early Removal Fee, but withdrawals and distributions, including required minimum distributions, can permanently reduce the monthly installments still to come. Early IRA withdrawals can carry their own IRS taxes and penalties.
How to claim
- Open a Traditional or Roth IRA on Public and keep your accounts in good standing.
- Make one-time or recurring contributions of at least $1.00, up to your IRS annual contribution limit.
- The 1% match is paid automatically in 12 monthly installments, starting about one month after each contribution settles.
- Avoid withdrawals from your Public accounts while installments are outstanding, since they can reduce the payments still to come.
Full review
Public's IRA Match Program pays a 1% cash match on eligible contributions to a Public Traditional or Roth IRA. Eligible contributions are new deposits of at least $1.00, one-time or recurring, initiated by you during the offer period; dividends, rewards, chargebacks, and anything above your IRS annual contribution limit do not count.
Because the limit caps what can be matched, the realistic maximum is $75 per year at the 2026 limit of $7,500, or $86 at the $8,600 limit for savers 50 and older. For contributions that settle on or after September 22, 2026, the match is paid in 12 equal monthly installments, the first about one month after settlement: a $6,000 contribution earns $60, paid as twelve payments of $5.
Public treats the match as interest earned by the IRA, so it does not eat into your contribution limit. The catch is how withdrawals are handled. New contributions no longer carry the five-year holding period or Early Removal Fee, but any withdrawal or distribution from your Public accounts, including required minimum distributions, reduces the balance the match is calculated on once your Unmatched Balance is used up, which permanently lowers the installments still to come.
An early IRA withdrawal can also carry its own IRS taxes and penalties. Contributions that settled before September 22, 2026 stay on the old terms: a single match payment and a five-year holding period with an Early Removal Fee equal to the match on any amount removed.
The contribution prong of the Match Program has run since March 24, 2025 with no announced end date, and Public still promotes it on its IRA page. The companion 1% match on account transfers and rollovers ended on May 31, 2026 and was relaunched on September 14, 2026.
Pros
- +The match is treated as interest income, so it does not count toward your IRS contribution limit.
- +Applies to both Traditional and Roth IRAs, with recurring contributions supported.
- +Automatic; no promo code or enrollment step beyond contributing.
- +Standing program with no announced end date, running since March 2025.
Cons
- −Capped by the IRS contribution limit, so the realistic ceiling is $75 to $86 per year at the 2026 limits.
- −Paid in 12 monthly installments, and withdrawals during that year can reduce the payments still to come.
- −Early IRA withdrawals can also trigger IRS taxes and penalties on top of the fee.
- −U.S. residents only, and it cannot be combined with other Public promotions.
