What J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing is

J.P. Morgan Self-Directed Investing is JPMorgan Chase's do-it-yourself brokerage, built into the Chase app and website. It launched in August 2018 as You Invest, with 100 free trades as its hook, and later took the J.P. Morgan name; fractional shares from $5 arrived in 2024. Accounts are held at J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, a broker-dealer registered with the SEC (8-35008) and FINRA (CRD 79) and a SIPC member, which protects up to $500,000 per customer, including $250,000 in cash, if the firm fails. SIPC does not cover market losses, and investments are not FDIC insured.

As one of the largest investment banks, J.P. Morgan Securities carries a long regulatory record, most of it tied to institutional trading. Items closer to retail clients include an SEC order in October 2024 over recommending costlier clone mutual funds when matching ETFs existed, and a FINRA fine in September 2026 for incomplete margin disclosures to about 4,500 customers.

Costs and account types

Online stock and ETF trades are $0, options cost $0.65 per contract, online mutual fund trades are free and Treasuries trade at no commission. There is no minimum to open. Call-in trades cost $25. The account types are individual or joint brokerage, Traditional and Roth IRAs, custodial UTMA accounts and trusts, though UTMA and trust accounts cannot take the bonus.

The costs to watch are on exit: moving all assets out costs $75 per account, and outgoing wires cost $25. Chase does not reimburse the transfer fee your old broker charges, so factor that in if you move assets to claim a bonus.

How the new-money bonus works

The current offer pays cash for new money brought in from outside JPMorgan Chase within 45 days of opening an account through the Chase offer page, which must be done by October 21, 2026. The tier is set on day 45: $50 for $5,000 to $24,999, $150 for $25,000 to $99,999, $325 for $100,000 to $249,999 and $1,000 at $250,000 or more. Most people land in the first two tiers, which is a 1.0% or 0.6% return on the deposit.

The money has to stay for 90 days from enrollment. Market losses do not count against you, but withdrawals do. The bonus arrives within 15 days of meeting the conditions and is ordinary cash you can withdraw. The key exclusion is that money from a Chase checking or savings account does not count, because assets from JPMorgan Chase and its affiliates are excluded; the new money must come from another bank or broker by cash transfer, in-kind transfer or rollover.

Only the primary holder's first Self-Directed account qualifies, and only one new-money bonus is allowed per 12 months. Chase may report the bonus on Form 1099-MISC (Form 1042-S for foreign persons), so expect it to be taxable income.

The offer changes often

Chase rotates this promotion. An older page advertising a $700 bonus now redirects to the current $50 to $1,000 table, and the terms say the offer can change or end without notice. If you are moving a large amount, check the live tier table on the day you open the account rather than relying on a figure you saw earlier.

Who can join

You must be at least 18 with a Social Security number and a US home address. You do not need to be a Chase bank customer, but the application must start from the offer page so the coupon code attaches. Some products are not available in every state.

Frequently asked questions

Is the J.P. Morgan $700 bonus real?

Not any more. The old $700 offer page now redirects to the current offer, which pays $50 to $1,000 in cash: $50 at $5,000, $150 at $25,000, $325 at $100,000 and $1,000 at $250,000 of new money added within 45 days.

Can I use money from my Chase checking account to qualify?

No. Assets from JPMorgan Chase or its affiliates are excluded. The new money has to come from another bank or broker, as a cash transfer, an in-kind securities transfer or a retirement rollover.

How long do I have to keep the money in the account?

90 days from the day you enroll. Market losses during that time are not counted against you, and the bonus is credited within 15 days after the conditions are met.

Do I need to be a Chase customer to get the bonus?

No. You need to be 18 or older with a Social Security number and a US address. Start the application from the Chase offer page so the coupon code is applied.

Is the J.P. Morgan investing bonus taxable?

Yes, it can be. Chase says the cash award may be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC, or Form 1042-S for foreign persons, and that you are responsible for any tax.
