US brokers pay for new money in three ways: a cash bonus tiered by how much you deposit, a percentage match on assets you transfer in, or a free stock. The list covers the brokers we track, each offer checked against the broker's own terms, and the cards show the realistic amount rather than the top tier.

This list covers only the brokers named in it. For every offer we track there, see Broker bonuses in United States
The bank-owned brokers pay a cash amount set by how much new money you bring. J.P. Morgan Self-Directed pays $50 for $5,000, $150 for $25,000, $325 for $100,000 and $1,000 for $250,000 or more. Merrill's 600ME offer starts at $100 for $20,000 and reaches $600 at $200,000. E*TRADE's OFFER26 pays $50 from $1,000 and $300 at $20,000, and only reaches its advertised $10,000 at $5 million.
Divide the bonus by the deposit before you compare: $300 on $20,000 is 1.5%, and $600 on $200,000 is 0.3%. For most people the realistic bonus is a few hundred dollars, and the money has to stay put to keep it.
Robinhood, Public and Moomoo pay a percentage of the assets you transfer from another broker. Robinhood offers a personalized 1% to 3% during its current campaign. Public pays 1% with no cap, spread over 60 monthly payments. Moomoo pays 3% on the first $20,000, so at most $600, in four quarterly instalments over a year.
These suit large accounts you were going to keep anyway. Robinhood can charge back the bonus if you move assets out within five years, and at Public each withdrawal beyond your unmatched balance permanently shrinks the payments still to come.
Every cash and transfer offer has a hold. Merrill sets your tier 90 days after you meet the funding requirement, based on net new assets, and J.P. Morgan needs the money kept for 90 days from enrollment. E*TRADE's hold runs 12 months after its 60-day funding window. Robinhood's transfer and IRA matches carry a five-year chargeback period.
Market losses generally do not count against you. Merrill and J.P. Morgan ignore trading gains and losses, and E*TRADE measures the deposit minus trading losses. What does count is moving money out: withdrawals and outgoing transfers during the hold can lower your tier or cancel the bonus.
Robinhood and Public also match contributions to a Traditional or Roth IRA. Robinhood pays 1%, or 3% with a Gold subscription, and Public pays 1% in 12 monthly payments. The 2026 IRA contribution limit is $7,500, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older, so a 1% match is worth at most $75 a year ($86 with the catch-up) and a 3% match at most $225 ($258).
Both brokers say the match counts as interest earned inside the IRA, not as a contribution, so it does not use up your annual limit. Robinhood's matched money must stay for five years or an early removal fee equal to the match applies. Public dropped its holding period for contributions settled from September 22, 2026, but withdrawals reduce the monthly payments still to come.
Treat a cash bonus as taxable income. E*TRADE says its OFFER26 credit is interest income reported on Form 1099-INT, J.P. Morgan may report its bonus on Form 1099-MISC, and Merrill says it may issue a Form 1099. A small bonus may come without a form, but it is still income.
Free stock is usually taxed at its value on the day you receive it, and that value becomes your cost basis when you sell, as Webull explains in its tax FAQ. IRA matches are different: Robinhood says the match is reported as income earned by the IRA, with no 1099, and it is then taxed under the IRA's own rules.
Most transfers between US brokers run through ACATS. You start the transfer at the new broker, and FINRA says validation and delivery usually take about three to four business days once your old firm accepts the request. Transfer holdings in kind where you can, because selling first can trigger capital gains tax in a taxable account.
Your old broker may charge an outgoing transfer fee. Robinhood reimburses up to $75 on transfers of $7,500 or more in its current campaign, Public up to $100 on $5,000 or more, and Firstrade up to $250 on $2,500 or more of eligible securities. The E*TRADE, Merrill and J.P. Morgan offers do not mention reimbursement.
The broker-dealers behind these offers are SIPC members, which you can confirm on sipc.org. If a member firm fails and customer assets are missing, SIPC protects up to $500,000 per customer, including up to $250,000 in cash. It does not cover market losses, and it does not cover crypto or other digital assets that are not registered securities.
